Portsmouth, Va. – “Don’t drink and drive.” That’s the message Portsmouth police are sending to the public ahead of the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Portsmouth police say officers will “be out in full force” this St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Approximately twenty-five (25) uniformed officers will look for impaired drivers.

Officers will conduct patrols at all hours of the day and night starting Friday, March 15th through Sunday, March 17th.

The officers will focus on locations where impaired drivers are more likely to be operating a vehicle.

The aggressive alcohol enforcement is grant funded by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The Portsmouth Police, Strategic Traffic Unit and assigned officers will be working in an overtime capacity.

Citizens will see marked and unmarked police vehicles, along with police motorcycles conducting traffic stops and checkpoints in their neighborhoods.

Drivers are reminded to take responsibility when it comes to driving under the influence.
