The search warrant affidavit for accused murderer Joseph Clarke Chatfield's home reveals the victim may have attacked him before the shooting.
Court documents said that Chatfield, a Navy sailor, told investigators that the victim, Casey Hardesty, put a railroad spike up to Chatfield's throat.
The search warrant said authorities did find a railroad spike, bullets and blood-stained clothes at Chatfield's home on Glenoak Drive in Norfolk where police say the deadly shooting happened.
Documents said that when investigators got to the scene Friday, Chatfield was leaning out of a patrol car, handcuffed and vomiting.
Records said Chatfield was heard yelling and in hysterics "I just shot someone!"
The search warrant said several people were at Chatfield's home when the shooting happened, but documents did not say why they were there.
"I was extremely, extremely shocked," said Cliffton Elliot, a friend of Chatfield. "[He's] not that kind of person. He's got a wife and a daughter that he loves very much and you can tell by his Facebook page that he's all about his daughter so, he's not violent and doesn't seem like that kind of guy."
Chatfield is being held in jail without bond. He declined NewsChannel 3's request for a jailhouse interview.
