On the last day of Black History Month, folks in Portsmouth remembered an important event.

They gathered on the campus of Tidewater Community College Thursday afternoon to commemorate the march on Washington.

It was the same march where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech in the 60s.

And for those at the event, the memories of fighting for equality are still very vivid.

One woman was arrested along with Jesse Jackson during an on-campus protest.

She told NewsChannel 3 she wanted to be a part of Thursday’s march to help young people remember the sacrifices of African-Americans in our nation's history.
