Man arrested in Portsmouth’s first homicide of the year

Portsmouth, Va. – Portsmouth police have arrested 47-year-old Gene Shelton Williams Jr. in the city’s first homicide of the year.

According to police, Williams and another man were with the victim, 43-year-old Anitha Kay Tevis were together the Saturday evening and went to Tevis’ home on Broad Street.

After the other man went to sleep in another room, Tevis and Williams began arguing after Tevis confronted Williams about going through her personal items and the argument turned into a physical altercation.

Williams left the house and called police, reporting only that he had been injured in a fight.

Tevis’ body was found after the other man woke up around 5am.

Williams was charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of robbery and is currently in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office.
