Richmond, Va. – The Virginia Senate has approved a bill that would make it illegal to smoke in a car with a child inside, according to WashingtonPost.com.

The measure also includes a $100 fine for anyone found guilty. The bill was proposed by Sen. Ralph S. Northam (D-Norfolk), a pediatric neurologist who unsuccessfully pushed for similar legislation in 2011. The Washington Post reports that Northam, who is also running for lieutenant governor, said Thursday that the bill will protect children from the ill effects of secondhand smoke and could cut down on health-care costs.
