Virginia Beach, Va. – The community is invited to take action to fight child hunger in Virginia Beach.

The “Fill a Beach Bag, Feed a Beach Child” food drive will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Virginia Beach school and community volunteers will collect food items near the fountain at Town Center, located at 193 Central Park Avenue and at Landstown Commons Shopping Center at 3344 Princess Anne Road. The goal is to fill two school buses with enough food to provide Beach Bags for the remainder of the year.

The Beach Bags program provides meals and healthy snacks to students who may not have enough to eat over weekends and school breaks. Since the program began in 2010, more than 19,000 bags have been given out to children across the school division, officials tell NewsChannel 3.

Each Beach Bag contains:

  • 2 individual-size boxes/bowls of cereal
  • 2 8-oz.shelf stable milk cartons (juice box-size)
  • 2 shelf stable main course items (chunky soup, spaghetti & meatballs, ravioli)
  • 4 oz. or larger fruit cups and/or 100% fruit juice boxes
  • 2 snack items (granola bars, cereal bars, raisins, pretzels, snack crackers)

Donations should be packed in a paper or plastic grocery bag. Bulk items are welcome. In addition, tax-deductible contributions payable to the Virginia Beach Education Foundation will be accepted.
