Norfolk, Va. – The former commanding officer of the USS Porter has received a non-judicial punishment for the ship’s collision with an oil tanker near the Straight of Hormuz in August.

Cmdr. Martin F. Arriola was punished by Rear Adm. David M. Thomas, Jr. at Admiral’s Mast following the investigation into the collision.

The Admiral’s Mast found Arriola in violation of Uniform Code of Military Justice articles 92 (Dereliction of Duty) and 110 (Hazarding a Vessel). Arriola received a punitive letter of reprimand for his actions.

Thomas relieved Arriola of command on August 30.

The Porter is now commanded by Cmdr. Dave Richardson, the former executive officer of USS McFaul, who is serving as a permanent relief.

Arriola has been assigned temporary duty at Naval Surface Force, Atlantic.

The ship is currently in port at Naval Station Norfolk.
