Norfolk, Va. - Maury High School in Norfolk will have an early dismissal Friday, January 18, 2013, due to a power outage, according to school officials.

Officials now say the power outage was caused by a piece of equipment on the overhead at 21st and Lewellyn that caught on fire. Crews had to replace it.

The outage affected several businesses in the area and over 2,200 customers.

Norfolk Public Schools has been working with Dominion Virginia Power on Friday, January 18, to correct a power outage at Maury High School following the overnight storm. As of 11:30 a.m., however, crews were unable to restore power.

Maury students were dismissed early. All students were dismissed as soon as buses could arrive from the NPS Transportation depot to transport bus riders.

Maury's seventh-bell exams will be rescheduled for after the teacher work day on January 25; however, students' grades will not be affected by the rescheduling.

The Maury JV basketball games have been postponed. The Athletic Director and Principal will decide whether the varsity basketball games between Maury and Norview, at Maury at 5:45 (girls) and 7:30 (boys), will need to be rescheduled if power is not back on by 4:30 p.m.
