A strong flu season that could be the worst in a decade has schools in Hampton Roads monitoring flu activity closely.

Virginia remains in the highest category of reported flu activity for a fourth consecutive week according to data from the Centers for Disease Control.

Most school divisions in Hampton Roads report that flu cases haven't spiked in recent weeks but they are monitoring all reports closely.

Suffolk and Isle of Wight Public Schools both reported they had increased flu activity prior to the winter holiday break.

Bethanne Bradshaw with Suffolk Public Schools says school nurses are keeping a close eye on students and teachers are making sure students are using proper cough etiquette and washing their hands frequently.

"There are sinks in the bathroom; there are sinks in most of the classrooms particularly the elementary level: wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands!" Bradshaw exclaimed.
