Manteo, N.C. - The body of a pilot who crashed his plane into the Croatan Sound Sunday morning was found Monday.  Dive teams removed his body from the submerged wreckage of the plane around noon.

A family member identified the pilot as Greg Carlisle of Raleigh, N.C.

The plane crashed about a mile offshore while attempting to land at the Dare County Regional Airport in Manteo around 11:45 a.m. Sunday.

Personnel from the Dare County Regional Airport and The Dare County Sheriff’s Office were able to rescue a female passenger, who had escaped the wreckage. She was transported to the Outer Banks Hospital, then taken to a hospital in Greenville.

It's not known what caused the crash yet, but the airport director says  thick fog likely played a big role.

The pilot's brother-in-law, Paul Beaman, says Carlisle was an experienced pilot who grew up flying.  He was flying his personal plane when he crashed.

Numerous agencies were on scene to assist with search and rescue efforts, including Dare County Emergency Management, Dare County EMS, Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department, Chicamacomico Volunteer Fire Department, Nags Head Fire and Rescue, NC Highway Patrol, NC Marine Patrol and NC Wildlife.

The Federal Aviation Administration and The National Transportation Safety Board have been notified.
