Rain, snow, triple digits, and sub-freezing… In typical Hampton Roads (and NE NC) style, we saw a little bit of everything in 2012. Here’s a look back at the numbers…

Let’s start with the 2012 temperature trends in Norfolk. Norfolk had 20 days with temperatures at or below the freezing point. On the flip side, Norfolk had 37 days with temperature at or above the 90° mark, with two of those days in the triple digits. 10 months had average monthly temperatures warmer than “normal”. Only June and November had average monthly temperatures cooler than “normal”.

2012 ended up being a soggy year, with a final precipitation total of 48.35”, 1.82” above average. However, 7 months had monthly precipitation totals below average (5 above). In 2012 Norfolk had a grand total of 122 days with measurable precipitation. 2012 was lacking when it came to winter weather. Only two months recorded snowfall, a trace in January and 0.5” in February.

Here are some of the headline totals for the four official record keeping sites across the WTKR/WGNT viewing area. (hottest, coldest, total precip, precip vs normal)

Norfolk: 102°/22°, 48.35”, +1.82”

Elizabeth City: 101°/16°, 47.77”, +1.19”

Wallops Island: 102°/17°, 49.03”, +8.19”

Hatteras: 91°/28°, 57.76”, -0.28”
