A new Walmart in Newport News is getting ready to open and it has brought with it more than 300 new jobs.

The store located near the intersection of Mercury Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue is slated to open on February 1st.

Right now the store is abuzz with workers setting up fixtures and stocking the shelves with merchandise.

"We're starting to get in trucks, get in merchandise, we've already set up the fixtures and now we are just trying to get the merchandise to the shelf," explained Manager Barrett Pasquini.

Nearly 350 workers are staffing the new store and over 300 of them are new hires.

"Honestly that's one of the best parts of the job - seeing the excitement when you offer them a job," stated Pasquini.

One of the new hires is Kimberly Holliday who will be supervising the bakery. She says the new job is a blessing.

"I was out of work for like five months. I had been looking daily for work. Walmart gave me a call and gave me the opportunity. I was so excited that they gave me a chance," Holliday said.

Now she's looking forward to the new year with her new job and a chance to make a mark on something new.

"Every time I walk in and I take a look at the shelves even though there's not a lot on it I'm excited because - I did that! Everyday that I come to work it will be like I really got a chance to work here from the ground up," Holliday explained.

The new store at 6111 Jefferson Avenue is not the only new store slated to open in Newport News this year.

A new Walmart Neighborhood Market is also set to open near the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Harpersville Road and will employ 90 new workers.
