A major strike at U.S. ports has been averted for at least a month.

Thousands of dockworkers, including those here in Hampton Roads, were threatening to head to the picket lines this weekend over their pay and benefits. It's something that would have crippled shipping up and down the east coast.

"Essentially everything is going to shut down that's related to the ports. We're talking about hundreds of thousands of jobs that could be impacted that are either directly or indirectly related to moving commerce through the ports."

Preparations for the strike were being made locally at the Port of Virginia. But now, it seems work will continue until a final deal is made.
