A plan is in the works to address shoreline erosion along the Colonial Parkway.

A report from the National Park Service characterizes the shoreline erosion along the York River as an "imminent threat."

The report calls for immediate action to stop "historic and storm damage."

It acknowledges that riverbank erosion has been "a recognized issue for years," but points to strong storms in late 2009 as a reason for increased recession along the shoreline.

Over the past few years the Park Service has performed spot treatments on several areas where the erosion has been particularly bad.

However, the report says more comprehensive action is needed in order to prevent the shoreline from moving further towards the parkway.

The proposed plan calls for repairing and stabilizing a 4.2 mile stretch of the shoreline along the York River in the area near Indian Field Creek using four different methods.

That includes revetments, walls with steel sheet piling, sills and breakwaters.
