Smithfield, Va. - Travis Newby was shot and killed in December of 2012 in his apartment after an attempted robbery police say. They are now hoping to get more information about this case.  Now police say they have made an arrest in this case.

They say calls came in at around 7 p.m. on December 19th, 2012 about a person who had been shot in the 740 block of Wrenn Road in Smithfield at the Jersey Park Apartments.

Officers say they found a victim outside of an apartment.  They say it appeared as though there was an altercation inside of an apartment that spilled over onto the sidewalk where the victim was found.

Police say 36-year-old Newby was initially transported by ambulance, but he was later picked up by helicopter and taken to Riverside in Newport News where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have now arrested 25-year-old Shymeek Laron Stanfield who has been charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The U.S. Marshals assisted police with this case because of the severity of the charges.

Marshals arrested Stanfield in Hampton without incident.
