Gates County, N.C.  – James Cross, the man accused of attacking a Gates County Couple with a drywall hammer, turned himself in on Monday. He was transported to the Hertford County Jail where he is being held on $500,000 bond.

Officials say Gates attacked attacked a couple with a hammer in their Gates County home on Saturday at 4:26 a.m.

They say the attack occurred in the 400 block of Hobbsville Rd.

Both victims were awakened by the 24-year-old James Cross, who wanted to use their telephone. Officials say one of the victims knew the Cross and let him in inside.

Once inside, Cross demanded money and got into a confrontation with the man.

Officials say once the victim refused, the suspect used a drywall hammer to hit the man in the back of the head.

The man suffered a fractured skull and also received injuries to his back and leg. He also fractured his foot during the tussle.

The man’s girlfriend heard what was going on and came down the hallway, where she was also hit in the head, also causing a fractured skull. She also lost teeth after being hit in the mouth.

Officials say Cross grabbed the woman, pulled her outside and continued to attack her.

They say the woman was able to fight off Cross, and she went back inside to call 911.

Officials say the first victim got on his 4-wheeler to get away, after which Cross fled on foot.
