NORFOLK, Va. – Cmdr. Kevin Byrne, commanding officer USS Barry (DDG 52), transferred leadership to Cmdr. Thomas Dickinson at a change of command ceremony held Friday.

During Byrne’s tenure as commanding officer, Barry earned the Battle Efficiency Award (Battle “E”), as well as the NATO Medal for maintaining a no-fly zone over Libya during Operation Unified Protector. He also oversaw the successful completion of the first phase of the ship’s extended dry-docking Selected Restricted Availability (SRA) as part of the DDG modernization two-phase program. During the SRA, the guided-missile destroyer received the Integrated Bridge Navigation System for the pilot house, as well as the Machinery Control System and the Digital Video Surveillance System for the Central Control Station, making Barry one of the most modernized ships on the waterfront.

Byrne has been commanding officer since June 2011 and is a native of Annapolis, Md.  He will serve next as an analyst at the PEO Integrated Warfare Systems Washington D.C.

Cmdr. Dickinson assumed command after serving as the ship’s executive officer since May 2011.
