Woman rescued from Suffolk house fire dies from injuries

Update: 69-year-old Mary Rodgers has died from her injuries at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Suffolk, Va. – One woman escaped from a burning home and her sister was rescued by firefighters in Suffolk Saturday morning.

The fire was first reported at 9am in the Burnett’s Mill subdivision on Mallard Drive.

64-year-old Janet Boyle, who owns the home, managed to crawl from the residence and was helped by neighbors. Her sister, 69-year-old Mary Rodgers was found by firefighters about 20 feet inside of the burning home. She was transported by Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and died Sunday morning.

One firefighter was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital with minor burns to both of his ears.

Two dogs escaped the blaze and were being cared for by neighbors.  One cat died in the blaze.

Over half of the home destroyed. The Suffolk Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause.
