WAVERLY, Va. (WTVR) -A Thanksgiving holiday turns violent in the town of Waverly.

Virginia State Police are investigating a domestic dispute that ended after a police officer shot the male suspect.

The call came in to Waverly Police early Thursday morning for a domestic dispute in the 100 block of New Street in Waverly, but when officers arrived the male suspect was not at the scene.

Around 1:30 a.m. another call came in for the same address. This time when police responded they found the mant and tried to arrest him, but police said he refused and a struggle ensued.

An officer then shot the suspect inside the home. He was transported to the VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injures.

“It just sounded like a boom…I knew somebody was shot,” said neighbor Cobie Drew. ”As far as him and her fighting and arguing, I never heard it before you know.”

Kenneth Manning, who grew up in this neighborhood, owns a convenience store nearby. He said that the neighborhood is busy, but there is not usually violence.

Sgt. Thomas Williams with Virginia State Police tells CBS 6 they believe the caller and the male suspect were dating, and that the man was likely just visiting the woman who lived there.

At this time police can’t say if the suspect had a weapon.
