Hampton , Va. – Hampton police officers shot a pit bull Saturday morning while trying to serve outstanding warrants.

According to police, the officers were attempting to serve warrants for violation of a protective order in the 1900 block of Andrews Blvd. They were looking for 29-year-old Michael Anthony Cleaton, who currently has warrants on file for Felony and Misdemeanor Violation of a Protective Order.

The officers were attempting to establish a perimeter when the pit bull broke through the fence and began chasing them.

The officers retreated across the street. While they waited for Animal Control to arrive to pit bull charged across the street and tried to attack the officers several times.

Both officers shot the dog, which was taken by Animal Control to and emergency veterinary clinic where it had to be euthanized as a result of its wounds.

Neither of the officers was injured. Both criminal and administrative investigations of the incident are being conducted, which is standard practice in all police shootings.
