State officials touring Accomack County today say the Eastern Shore was the hardest hit part of Virginia as Hurricane Sandy rolled through.

Tide surges of up to seven feet ate through dunes and beaches, flooding towns all along the Eastern Shore, from Cape Charles to Chincoteague. State and federal officials today started tallying the damage from the downed trees and flooded buildings.

Longtime Eastern Shore neighbors told us right after the storm exactly what state leaders found out today. Sandy was one of the worst hurricanes in memory.

VDOT said today its crews have cleared downed trees, sand and water from all the secondary roads. All roads on the Eastern Shore are open, VDOT says. The agency said some of its crews even helped rescue neighbors stranded by rising water.

State officials and FEMA representatives will spend the next several days assessing the damage along the Eastern Shore. In Chincoteague, hit both by high winds and rising water, town officials said the damage would probably top a million dollars.
