Dare County Fire Marshal – Information on Debris Burning
After a storm people do a lot of yard work that includes the burning of leaves and yard debris. In North Carolina, more than 40 percent of all wildfires are caused by careless debris burning, making it the No. 1 cause of wildfires in the state.

With a burn permit, Dare County allows for the residential burning of leaves, tree branches, or yard trimmings originating on the premises of private residences in those areas where no public pickup is available. Burning must be done between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and shall not create a nuisance. Permits are free.

It is always illegal to burn household trash or any other non-vegetative matter. For people who do choose to burn debris, the Dare County Fire Marshal’s Office offers the following tips to protect property and prevent wildfires:

  • Always consider alternatives to burning. Leaves, grass, and stubble may be of more value if used for compost.
  • Obtain a burning permit at the Dare County Fire Marshal’s Office, Dare Forestry office, a local agent authorized by Forest Ranger, or online at http://ncforestservice.gov.
  • Check the weather – don’t burn on dry, windy days.
  • Know your local burning laws.
  • Be prepared with a water source, a shovel, and phone.
  • Stay with your fire until it is completely out.

Studies have shown that taking these other measures can greatly reduce wildfires, and the loss of property associated with them. The N.C. Forest Service and U.S. Forest Service are urging residents throughout the state to keep safety in mind and exercise caution during the upcoming fall wildfire season that typically lasts from mid-October until mid-December. Also, take time now to prepare your home against wildfires. Tips on protecting your property can be found at www.firewise.org.

Dare County Planning Department – Important Information

Residents whose homes or businesses have experienced flooding of electrical outlets or electrical equipment should contact a North Carolina licensed electrician to inspect for possible electrical hazards.

Building permits are not needed for non-structural repairs such as shingle replacement. All structural repairs or improvements will require a building permit. However, there will be no building permit fee charged for storm damage repairs in unincorporated Dare County.
