Citizens in Ocean View prepared for the worst of Sandy

The waves at Ocean View softly crashed against the fishing pier Tuesday afternoon.

It was a stark contrast to wild waves from Sandy's wrath Monday night.

A force so powerful Ron Boone braced for the worst when it came to the pier he rebuilt after Hurricane Isabel destroyed it in 2003.

“Very, very lucky to lose three or four boards that snapped up when you could have lost the entire pier or neighbors could have lost their houses. I'm extremely, extremely fortunate,”

Just a few yards away along the bay, Vincent Hill spent the day collecting debris and fixing the fence Sandy severed.

“I didn’t expect this. I didn't expect the fence to come down so I guess it was worse than what I thought because when Irene came, it was just sand. So I was expecting to be pushing a lot of sand around, not so much damage to the house,” says Hill.

Not far away on Third Bay, water lines on Marcella Powell's garage mark the spot where the water stopped.

But she says cars like the one we caught trying to drive down her flooded street made matters worse.

“It was just enough for them to go through and make waves and then pop the door off the frame and buckle it.”

While some folks in Ocean View got more or less damage than they expected, all are grateful their worst fears for Sandy didn't come true.
