aHURRICANE SANDY: 5 a.m. update - Sandy gains strength and now has sustained winds of 85 mph. Sandy is centered about 285 miles east of Cape Hatteras and moving north at 15 mph. Sandy will continue to track north and turn northwest later today.

The center of the storm will likely make landfall tonight in southern New Jersey.

We will continue to have heavy rain, tropical storm strength winds, and tidal flooding. As Sandy moves up the coast we will tend to see less rain farther south and more rain north.

Wind gusts will continue to reach into 60mph range, especially for the Eastern Shore. Our next high tide is mid-morning, 9:24 a.m. for Sewells Point. This will be the peak of tidal flooding for most of the area. The exception is the Bay side of the Eastern Shore.

As the winds shift later today and tonight expect a surge of 2 to 3 feet. Conditions for everyone will gradually improve through Tuesday.
