Portsmouth, V.A. – The Coast Guard medevaced a 64-year-old man from a 25-foot recreational boat approximately 30 miles east of Hatteras Inlet, N.C., Wednesday.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Station Hatteras Inlet received a VHF-FM channel 16 distress call from people aboard the 25-foot vessel when one of the men aboard fell unconscious.

The watchstanders contacted Dare County Emergency Medical Services and requested EMS responders assist them with the medevac.

Two EMS personnel joined a Coast Guard crew aboard a 47-foot Motor Life Boat from Station Hatteras Inlet.

The MLB crew arrived on scene, transferred the unconscious man aboard and started heading to shore while the EMS responders began evaluating the man.

“Having the Dare County EMS go with us definitely helped during this case,” said Senior Chief Petty Officer Christopher Wright, officer-in-charge of Station Hatteras Inlet. “They were able to set up an IV to treat the dehydration before we ever got to the dock.”
