They say he is on administrative leave while the city hires an independent municipal attorney to investigate an undercover cigarette sting.
Here's a quote from city manager Mary Bunting:
“As the captain of the ship, so to speak, it is my responsibility to get to the bottom of what has happened and if there were mistakes made, fix what needs to be fixed. I am fully committed to doing so, and to being transparent at the appropriate time.”
She goes on to say placing the chief on leave does not mean the city is saying he did anything wrong.
Bunting says that is so the city can conduct the investigation without the perception of influence.
The city is hiring an independent accounting firm and independent municipal attorney for the investigation which is expected to be finished by the end of this month.
In the meantime, the department will be run by former Chief Thomas Townsend.
