SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY – On Oct. 8, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and contract crews completed the Route 58 Concrete Rehabilitation Project between Capron and Courtland, Virginia.

Over five miles of Route 58 were reconstructed from Route 653 to nearly one mile west of Route 35. Designed to rehabilitate the existing lanes, construction was developed in three sections. The first, located closest to Capron, entailed a full-depth reconstruction. For the remainder of the project, the surface of the roadway was rehabilitated with a concrete overlay that is added to the existing foundation. This project also updated roadway signage and road markings. Protective structures such as guardrails and shoulders have also been built to complement the new roadway.

Since May 2012, traffic along this section of Southampton County highway was reduced to a single lane. This past weekend, both east and westbound traffic was restored to two lanes in either direction and speed limits were restored to 60 mph.
