VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – BluePearl Veterinary Partners recommends for pet owners to keep a close eye on their dogs after a major pet food manufacturer announced a recall of one of their brands due to potential salmonella contamination.

According to a press release issued by Breeder’s Choice Pet Foods, the company is recalling only its AvoDerm Natural Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Adult Dog Formula with the “Best Before” dates of 28 Aug 2013, 29 Aug 2013, 30 Aug 2013.

The recalled product was distributed to retailers and distribution centers in California, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, Virginia and Washington.

People who have the potentially contaminated product should discard it immediately and stop handling it as it poses a risk to humans and other animals as well.

In addition to direct transmission to dogs, salmonella is zoonotic disease, which means it can be passed from animals to humans. Common symptoms of salmonella in dogs include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever and abdominal discomfort.

“If your pet is experiencing vomiting, diarrhea or otherwise not acting right, contact your primary care veterinarian as soon as possible,” said Dr. Neil Shaw, chief medical officer of BluePearl Veterinary Partners, a group of specialty and emergency veterinary hospitals. “If it is an after-hours emergency, we would be glad to help at one of our locations.”
