A North Carolina woman has been arrested for leaving a dog in a hot car in Newport News.
Police say on Monday, July 16, 2012 at 1:46 p.m., EMS teams received a call to the area of Hiden Boulevard and Warwick Boulevard in reference to a dog who had been in a vehicle all day.
Newport News Animal Services and a Newport News police officer responded. They found a Yorkshire Terrier in a crate inside a vehicle with the doors locked and the windows rolled all the way up.
Police then found the owner and unlocked the vehicle. They say the 1-year-old, 4 pound Yorkie was hardly moving and was transported to an area vet.
The Animal Services Officer determined it was approximately 130 degrees inside the vehicle.
According to officials, the owner of the vehicle, Julie Elisma, is not the owner of the dog. She was dog-sitting for her boyfriend and the dog had been in the vehicle for several hours while Elisma was attending an orientation at one of the business offices in the area.
Newport News police arrested 24-year-old Julie Elisma, of the 7200 block of Lake Vista Drive in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Elisma was issued a misdemeanor summons for animal cruelty.
Due to the condition of the Yorkie, he was euthanized. The officer then obtained a felony warrant for animal cruelty for Julie Elisma.
Elisma turned herself in to police headquarters on Tuesday, July 17, 2012.
