NewsChannel 3 caught up with a surprised Mamie Johnson at Richard Bowling Elementary School.

Laughing while trying to figure out why we were there, I told her we got an email from 10-year-old Janiah Mullen, a student at the school. I had Janiah read a portion of that email.

"And I will love to nominate Ms. Mamie Johnson. She's done so much for the kids and community. Please make my wish come true. I'm going to do all I can to nominate her. So work your magic!"  And that's what we did and presented Johnson with a NewsChannel 3 People Taking Action award.

Her mother, Sabrina Mullen, says it was all Janiah's idea.

"I was in my bedroom and Janiah said she wanted to do something nice for Ms. Johnson and we look at Channel 3 every day faithfully and I told her she should nominate her.

Mamie Johnson, who lives across the street from the school and is president of the Broad Creek Civic League, is always doing something for Richard Bowling Elementary, like a free summer academy at the school. It's in its seventh year and offers field trips, art, academics, music classes and much more. It was Johnson who got the funding.

The principal at Richard Bowling says when he needs something done for the school and he's running into a lot of roadblocks, he calls Mamie Johnson.

He says she knows how to get things done in the community.
