The mold monster might not be real, but the outrage from the community is after a Navy captain called out NewsChannel 3 saying our reporting is like something out of a “science fiction movie.”
In the past 24 hours, NewsChannel 3 has been inundated with comments from viewers, through email and on Facebook.
“How dare the Navy downplay this serious issue. Shame on them,” said one viewer.
“Stop blaming because WTKR is not responsible for the housing. They brought it to light and it’s about time!” commented another.
The captain's quote was written in an article published on Monday in the Virginian Pilot from Captain Don Hagen, the director of Industrial Hygiene for the Navy Public Health Center.
"If you listen to WTKR, it's like a science fiction movie, there's mold monsters growing everywhere and that's just not the case,” he said.
Not many were pleased with the captain's choice of words.
“Of course a Navy Captain would say something like that. He doesn't have to live in Navy housing,” said a resident.
The possible health impact is one of the biggest concerns for both current and former Lincoln Military Housing residents.
Since moving out of Lincoln, one family says that their 7-year-old no longer has nose bleeds and their little girl no longer has lesions on her body.
“I’ve only been out a couple of days, but just over the course of the weekend, my headaches have been getting so much better,” said another former resident.
Several Navy wives applauded NewsChannel 3’s efforts to help military families on camera and the praise didn't stop online.
“The reporting on this story has been a great example of what taking action, getting results truly means. You are proving it is not just a gimmick slogan,” said one viewer.
Mold monster or not, NewsChannel 3 will continue to be here fighting for military families.
